Changes to Medical Exam Requirement for Adjustments of Status (I-485)

Author: Angelita Chavez

On June 11, 2025 the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced changes in their Policy Manual as it relates to the validity of Medical Examinations (Form I-693). A Form I-693 is required with all applications for adjustment of status which allows a person to obtain lawful permanent residence in the United States (US). A Form I-693 medical examination form must be properly completed and signed buy a Civil Surgeon.

Changes to Policy Manual:

  • All medical examinations forms signed by a Civil Surgeon on, or after, November 1, 2023, are only valid while a Form I-485 Application to Adjust Status remains pending with USCIS.

  • Any Form I-485 that is withdrawn or denied will require a newly completed and Form I-693 Medical Examination by a Civil Surgeon for subsequent submissions.

Previous policy published in 2024 allowed for a medical examination Form I-693 to be valid indefinitely.
